Two forts stand on the shore three hours west of Accra: Elmina, built by the Portuguese in 1482, and Cape Coast, the British headquarters of the trade. Both held enslaved people in dungeons under the courtyards before they were shipped across the Atlantic. Most operators pair the castles with the Kakum canopy inland; the difference between the runs below is how much of the day the road takes.

Both castles and back to Accra
Out of Accra before six, Elmina first while the fishing fleet is still unloading, Cape Coast after lunch, back in the city late. It is the run most travellers take and the one with the earliest alarm.
Cape Coast with a morning at Kakum
The canopy walkway opens at eight and is quietest then, so this order runs Kakum first and the castle in the afternoon. Seven bridges, 350 metres of rope, and a rainforest floor a long way down.
Assin Manso on the way to the coast
Assin Manso sits on the road between Kumasi and the coast, where captives were washed in the river before the final march to the forts. The site keeps a memorial garden and two graves. Visits are quiet and guided.

Three things you can only do in Ghana.
West Africa has beaches and markets everywhere. The rope bridges at Kakum, the cocoa farm that started an industry and the Akan naming ceremony belong to this country alone.
The Canopy Walkway
Seven rope bridges hang between forest giants in Kakum National Park, 30 metres up and 350 metres end to end. It was built in 1995 by Canadian and Ghanaian engineers and it is still the only canopy walkway of its kind in West Africa. Go at opening time: the boards are quiet, the forest is loud, and the queue that builds by ten has not arrived yet.

The Cocoa Farm
Tetteh Quarshie carried cocoa pods home from Fernando Po in 1879 and planted them at Mampong, in the hills above Accra. Ghana has been the second largest producer on earth more or less ever since. On a farm visit you split a pod, taste the white pulp around the raw bean, and watch the beans dry on raised mats by the roadside.

The Naming Ceremony
Akan children are named for the day of the week they were born: Kwame for a Saturday boy, Ama for a Saturday girl, and so on through the week. Ghana keeps its elephants a long way from the coast.

The Ghanaian rains are short, heavy and no reason to lose a day.
The big rains run May and June in the south, with a shorter wet spell in September and October; December to February the harmattan blows dust down from the Sahara instead. Rain here arrives hard and clears fast. Book the day around a kitchen, a loom or a market roof and the weather stops mattering.
